Oxford Lib Dems Lead Charge Against Post Office Closures10.51.27am UTC (GMT +0000) Tue 23rd Jan 2007
Liberal Democrats over the city have recently joined forces to fight government proposals to close up to 2500 Post Offices nationwide. At least 15 Post Offices have closed in Oxford since 1999, with the latest shutting in Summertown at the end of last year. The local petition against Post Office cuts can be signed online, at oxfordcitylibdems.org.uk City Council Lib Dems have passed a motion committing the council against the Post Office cuts, despite Labour councillors' attempts to sympathise with the Department for Trade and Industry's plans. Steve Goddard, parliamentary spokesman for Oxford East, said, 'post offices are valuable resources for urban communities as well as rural ones. We need to preserve them from more Labour cuts, as their role changes and adapts to serve our communities in new ways.' Richard Huzzey, councillor for Holywell, said, 'the City Council should rightly oppose the loss of 2,500 post offices nationwide. Post offices are increasingly becoming one stop-shops for communities to interact with public bodies, and it's very much our business that we keep these local outposts serving communities in Oxford.'
